| I know that buying things does not make you happy.
but I have purchased a couple simple little things in the past 24 hours that have made me feel very good.
a) colorful notebooks 50 cents each. in order!

b) Qdoba that is fresh and healthy and tasty.

I also returned my $275 camera... so I splurged on healthy Qdoba instead of cereal for lunch. | | |
| So, I have probably told some of you about the Dove/Axe controversy. I'll summarize, but to read about it, click here. Most of you know, Dove is currently in the middle of a "Real Women" campaign. Hoping to reduce the negative stereotypes pervasive in the media. That's cool. Very good goal.
However, Dove is owned by Unilever, the same company that owns Axe, the producers of the horrendous commercials that are borderline pornographic and completely degrading to women.
(Here's a clever little comparison between Dove's commercial and a commentary on it.)
However, I don't want to completely throw away Dove's campaign. If it reaches people and makes people rethink the issue, then the motives are secondary. But I also think it's important to remember how corporations work. Very rarely are they actually looking to help people. Dove's sales went up 700% in the UK after launching that campaign.
BUT last night a Nivea commercial made me laugh and applaud. Again, they are just playing a different angle to make money, but I appreciated it. I haven't been able to find a video yet, but here's the basic jist...
The ad is for a guy's body wash. And it mostly features normal guys, some good looking, some not so much, but mostly normal. and they just talk about how they really just want to be clean. They don't want girls to be able to smell them from 500 feet. There's more, but I can't remember. I only saw it once.
Anyway, I just appreciated a commercial that was playing the "people are smart and not animals" angle. Good work, Nivea.

| Wow, this blog is fading fast.
But I am extremely bored at work, so there's that. I am also extremely cold. I am wearing jeans and a sweatshirt with the hood up and I have goosebumps all over. I don't understand. I dislike not having windows, or real air. oh well.
In other news, I will not be working my downtown job in the fall. I have applied to a bunch of other positions but no news yet. I have applied at Aldi- because they pay $10.50 an hour. yes please. I have applied at Blockbuster- because it is literally right next to my apartment and I wouldn't have to drive. I have applied to clean offices in Jenison in the evenings.- this also pays very well. I am in the process of applying for a freelance graphic design position for the people who market for Monte's Lounge, O'Tooles, and Rockwell's Republic. That is a long shot, but I made it from the 100 applicants to the handful of people who they want to turn in designs! That's good news for a non-major.
But, the problem with most retail jobs is that they really don't seem to like you if you don't want to work weekends. But honestly, what am I supposed to do? Abandon a relationship to make $50? No thanks.
However, I just got my tuition bill today and... wow. About $2000 increase from last year. Awesome. Thanks, guys.
Needless to say, money is a bitch.
But the rest of my life is pretty good. I have felt quite content lately. (Aside from a couple inter-personal conflicts and slight emotional relapses. These things happen.)
But no really, I just wrote the other day that I finally do not feel like a victim of life. I feel like I am in a place where I can really start forgetting myself and pay attention to the people and world around me.

| John Cusack spouting existential thoughts and romantic proposals while shooting various hitmen including a profane Dan Akroyd = Hilarious. I forgot how incredibly funny this movie is. I wish the writer had done more... but alas, nothing.
Last night and today I read through my entire xanga history (looking for writing assignment fodder). 5 years of my life was kind of jammed into my consciousness. It was overwhelming. It made me very contemplative. It was good, just strange.
I also remembered lots of great music I had forgotten. If anyone has the following songs, feel free to email them to me:
Andrew Peterson - Come Lord Jesus Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining Philmore - Never Let You Go Twothirtyeight - made a way for moses Thursday - Asleep in the chapel LaRue - As She Cries Sick of Change - Scarlet Hangnail - at arms length
